Circles

You make yourself weak

Or you make yourself strong;

It doesn’t matter,

In the end you're still wrong

Sacrifice your dreams.

For the sake of another,

You're so martyresque,

How worthless, a bother.

So you strive ahead,

With you own goals in mind;

For shame! Acquiesce

She's better-step behind.

Perfecting your work,

At the cost of all else,

You try much too hard,

Take some time for yourself.

I'll change as you wish,

Correct my mistake,

Wrong again? I'm sorry,

I'll retract my new break.

I should lose five pounds?

Oh now I’m too thin?

Okay, it’s fixed. Now I’m-

Fat!? Can I ever win?

I'm rather confused,

Still one more fault I'm sure,

I don't know my left

From my right anymore!

You're a fool if you do,

Worse yet if you don't,

You can tell me to change,

But this time, I won't.

                Together

·         Sometimes-

·         I hug you,

·         And you kiss me,

·         And we are-happy.

·         Lost

·         To love a broken heart,

·         To nurse a chronic wound,

·         To hope for the impossible,

·         To put my faith in you.

·

·         To promise the whole world,

·         To declare undying love,

·         To rise in the morning-

·         When you cannot see the sun.

·

·         To send prayers to deaf ears,

·         To wish the past undone,

·         To foolishly believe-

·         I could ever be enough.

  1. Wow, Rachel, these poems convey a wide range of emotions. Did you write all of these on the same day? I really like "Circles;" it's a different tone for you, more cynical and defiant. Anger is a potent muse, and the racing rhythms of the poem complement the subject matter.

"Together" and "Lost" are really touching juxtaposed as they are. It's almost like the first captures a brief moment of happiness before reality and self-doubt set in again. The use of repetition is very effective.
